“It’s rare to be asked to write music for a project that aligns so well exactly with my concerns and passions about the world, and it’s been a great honour to do a project with a global icon.
‘Our Story’ tells a story of our planet from its origin to the present day on every level scale, from the cosmic to the microbial, but it has, at its heart, a message of connectedness.
I tried to write a score that stands in awe of the universe and nature: the scale, the detail, the complexity of its patterns but one that also embraced that we ARE nature and nature is us.
In the end, the hopeful message of the piece is that the answer to nature’s problems already lies within us: put very simply, it is that we need to re-find harmony.
The music began with the ‘Earthrise’ sequence, who the Apollo astronauts first saw the whole of the Earth from space. For me this was the emotional heart of ‘Our Story’ - the moment when human beings, in one frame, could take in both Earth’s majesty and its fragility - this score is a humble attempt to hold onto both these things.
Featured on the album are some brilliant musicians, many of them longterm collaborators:
Lucy Wilkins - Violin/ Viola and co-arranger
Jason Cooper - Drums and Percussion
Kate St John - Cor Anglais and Oboe
Alex Lee - Guitar
Sarah Willson - Cello
Melanie Pappenheim - Singer
Esmé Herbert - Singer
Charlotte Glasson - Soprano Sax, Flute, Duduk
Mike Kearsey - Trombone, Tuba, Euphonium
Rosie Tompsett -Violin
Jenny May Logan - Violin
Jonathan Stokes - Trombone

Watch our human story from our earliest beginnings to the tipping point when we begin to influence the world around us.
Sir David’s words have crafted the experience, which reflects his lifetime exploring our planet and sharing its wonders with the world. His personal message of hope leaves us feeling empowered to help write the next chapter in our story.
Produced by the award-winning filmmakers behind many of Sir David’s documentaries, this new 50-minute experience blends footage of the natural world with cutting-edge animation to create something truly special that you can’t experience from home.

The Guggenheim Bilbao Museum celebrates its 25th Anniversary
The Guggenheim Bilbao Museum premiered in December 2022, Immersions, a large-scale light, sound & projection mapping show designed to celebrate the Museum’s 25th Anniversary.
Immersions continues on from Reflections, the spectacular projection mapping show on the façade of the Frank Gehry-designed building, which took place in 2017 to mark the museum’s 20th anniversary.
Immersions is the latest project from the British design studio 59 Productions, which created the 20 minute work Reflections in 2017, with music composed by Nick Powell.
